Sanskrit & Tamil Spiritual Names & Meanings

Bhairavi

Bhairavi is the beautiful and dangerous warrior Goddess. She represents the transforming heat (tapas) or radiance of Tejas, which is the primal power of Divine energy. Sometimes we may experience this energy as frightening, because it burns away and destroys all our limitations and illusions of egocentric existence.

The destructive energy of Bhairavi is directed towards the impurities within us as well as the negative forces that may try to interfere with our spiritual growth. Though a difficult force to bear, her activity is necessary both to guide and to protect us. Bhairavi is like a mother, fighting against whatever may threaten her children.

Bhairavi also represent the supreme power of speech, which is said to be related to one of the five elements, fire. She is the basic will power of life, through which we can control all of its manifestations. The fierce form of Divine energy exists within us as the power of transforming heat (tapas). Tapas is the heat of spiritual inquiry and aspiration, which causes us to discard all that is not essential in life. Bhairavi as a manifestation of tapas is especially worshipped by those seeking knowledge or by those practicing brahmacharya. She gives control of the senses, the emotions and wandering thoughts. She helps us during fasting, vows of silence, meditation retreats, pilgrimages, during the practice of celibacy or any other intensive spiritual discipline that we practise. Whatever obstructions arise during our practice of tapas, we can call on Bhairavi to eliminate them.
