Famous Racehorses
  • Abercrombie (USA) - an outstanding pacer, stakes and free-for-all winner from age two through four. Sired more than 1700 foals that have earned nearly $130 million.

  • Adios (USA) - considered by many harness historians and pedigree experts to be one of the most important and influential pacing sires of modern times.

  • Adios Butler (USA) - famous harness-racer 

  • Affirmed (USA) - last horse to win the U.S. Triple Crown (1978)

  • Ajax (Aust) - in 1937 Ajax began a phenomenal run of 18 successive victories, in races now all at Group level. In six of these races he broke race or course records, or equalled Australian records.

  • Albatross (USA) - all-time record money-earning pacer of that era, winning 59 of 71 career starts and more than $1.2 million in career earnings, being crowned a world champion at ages two, three and four.

  • Alydar (USA) - finished second to Affirmed in all three Triple Crown races, and one of the great sires in North American history

  • Archer (Aust)  - winner of the first Melbourne Cup in 1861

  • Arkle (Ire) - reckoned the greatest steeplechaser of all time

  • Bernborough (Aust) - 37 starts, 26 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third, 8 unplaced

  • Better Loosen Up (Aust) - stake winnings exceeded $4.5 million. Inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame

  • Carbine (NZ) - Perhaps the greatest racehorse/sire ever bred in the southern hemisphere.

  • Cardigan Bay (NZ) - pacer, won 80 races all up and retired to New Zealand.

  • Citation (USA) - Triple Crown winner in 1948. The first horse to win US$1 million.

  • Eclipse (GB) - celebrated 18th century racehorse that won 18 races in 18 starts. 80% of modern thoroughbred racehorses have Eclipse in their pedigrees

  • Gloaming (Aust) - Gloaming - He won 57 of his 67 starts, was second in nine others. Inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame

  • Hall Mark (Aust) - 1933 Melbourne Cup winner

  • Heroic (Aust) - brilliant and versatile horse, Heroic won 21 races at distances from five furlongs to two miles.  Inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame

  • John Henry (USA) When he retired, he was the sport's all-time leading money-winner with $6,597,947 in purses.

  • Kingston Town (Aust) - the outstanding galloper of his era. 41 starts, 30 wins, 5 seconds, 2 thirds, 4 unplaced

  • Malua (Aust) - most versatile of all Australian champion gallopers, Malua won in the best company from three and a half furlongs to three and a quarter miles.

  • Manfred (Aust) - one of the most brilliant and most erratic racehorses of his time. (1920's)

  • Manikato (Aust) - won 29 of his 47 starts and was second nine times and had career earnings of more than $1.1 million. Inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame

  • Man O' War (USA) - who re-wrote the record books

  • Might & Power (NZ) - rated the world's best stayer in 1997 after taking out the Caulfield-Melbourne Cups double. He won 15 of his 33 career starts and earned more than $5 million in prize money.

  • Nijinsky II (Can) - last horse to win the English Triple Crown (1970)

  • Northern Dancer (Can) - the most successful Thoroughbred sire ever

  • Peter Pan (Aust) - 1934 Melbourne Cup winner. One of Australia’s greatest stayers. Inducted into the Hall of Fame

  • Phar Lap (NZ) - great Australian racehorse. Won 36 races and was placed 5 times

  • Poitrel - Winner of the 1920 Melbourne Cup

  • Poseidon (Aust) - Won 11 of his 14 races including the 1906 Melbourne Cup. Has strong claims to be considered the greatest stayer ever produced in Australia.

  • Red Rum (IRE) - only horse in the history of the Aintree Grand National Steeplechase to win the race three times (he also came second on two other occasions)

  • Rising Fast (NZ) - Rising Fast was one of the greatest gallopers ever to grace the Australian turf. 

  • Seattle Slew (USA) - Triple Crown winner in 1977

  • Seabiscuit (USA) - became a public favourite while winning 33 of his 89 career starts and amassing a then-record $437,730 in career prize money.

  • Secretariat (USA) - Triple Crown winner of 1973

  • Shergar (IRE) - the kidnapped winner of the 1981 Epsom Derby

  • Sunline (NZ) - the first horse to be inducted into the Hall of Fame while still racing. Her career statistics so far read 44 starts for 31 wins and ten placings and she is the all-time prize money record holder with more than $11 million in prize money. 

  • The Barb (Aust) - winner of the 1866 Melbourne Cup. Can lay strong claim to the title of Australia's first champion racehorse.

  • Tobin Bronze (Aust) - the star of the middle-distance and weight-for-age scene in Australia in the mid 1960s

  • Tulloch (NZ) - his three-year-old career remains unmatched in Australian racing history.

  • Vain (Aust) - undoubtedly one of Australia’s greatest sprinters, he sired 370 winners of almost 1,800 races including two Golden Slipper winners

  • Wakeful (Aust) - a late-starter as a racehorse, not competing until she was four but she certainly made up for lost time winning 19 weight-for-age races during her career.

  • War Admiral (USA) - Horse of the Year & Triple Crown Winner - 1937
