Captain Wilgress
In 1670 Captain Wilgress from Jamaica was sent by the Governor of Jamaica to search and capture Captain Yallahs, a Dutchman in Spanish service. Captain Yallahs was fighting the English logwood cutters. Unfortunately Captain Wilgress went himself buccaneering for his own profit catching a Spanish vessel ashore, burning Spanish houses along the coast and stealing logwood. The name Wilgress is a very unusual name originating in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in England. Literally translated from the Saxon, it means "wild boar". It is known that some of the Wilgress family emigrated to North America and probably to Jamaica as well. The name is known in Canada where there is a Lake Wilgress there.
