They bred Afghans for some 10 years before acquiring their first Kerry Blue and in that time showed successfully a Whippet, a Miniature Schnauzer, and more recently they have shown a Lhasa Apso and a couple of Wirehaired Fox Terriers. Their show career with Afghans was more than satisfactory in that they handled some 10 to their Australian Championship, 6 of these were Best in Show winners. Of the Afghans bred under their prefix "Pharno", there were 12 Champions including, 5 Best in Show winners. The breeding side of dog activities has a fascination of its own and thry were extremely pleased with their Kerry Blues (4 Best in Show Winners in the first litter!!!!), over the years they have produced many winners for others. Their Kerry Blue imports (2 English Champions, 1 Junior Warrant Winner and another dog from Ireland) have made a significant contribution to the popularity of the breed in Australia. One was National Dog of the year in 1979, which was no mean feat you may rest assured. Another won the Best Terrier in the Australian Bicentennial Top Dog Competition in 1988. In 1999, they imported a virtually unshown but high quality Kerry Blue dog from Ireland. They expect that he will help to continue their success both as breeders and as exhibitors.
They are both "All Breeds" Status, being licensed for all breeds in Australia and have been judging for more than 25 years, having judged in all States of Australia and making judging visits to UK, Ireland, New Zealand, America, Canada, Finland, the Philippines, India, South Africa, Thailand, Indonesia, Germany and the Czech Republic. They have been participating in the training of judges for over 20 years now. Dee is currently the Co-ordinator for ACT Canine Association Judges Training Scheme & Derek is Convenor for the Terrier Group.
They have both been heavily involved in the administration side of dogs as well and are both life members of the Australian Capital Territory Canine Association. Derek is the Treasurer of the Border Terrier Club of NSW and Dee is the Show Secretary & both are life members of that club. Derek is Senior Vice President and Dee, the Treasurer, of the Belconnen All Breeds Kennel Club which holds one of the most significant show weekends in our area. More recently they have taken positions on the committee of the Canberra Royal Show Dog Section.
